Epic Games Veteran Alain Tascan Becomes Netflix's New Gaming President
In a significant change in its gaming unit, Netflix has appointed Alain Tascan, a former Epic Games executive, as the new Gaming President. This move is significant because it shows that Netflix is doubling down on its efforts to enter the gaming space.
Alain Tascan has joined Netflix from the video game industry where he has been working for more than 30 years. He has also worked as the executive vice president of game development at Epic Games, and managed games such as Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys. Tascan also played a very active role in the establishment of Montreal Studios for Ubisoft and Electronic Arts and this proved that he has been involved in the industry at large.
Netflix is planning on changing the perception of gaming by incorporating its huge library with gaming features. Netflix currently has around 238 million subscribers as of 2024 and is in a vantage point to integrate traditional media with gaming to come up with one social media platform. The management aims at launching new games every month starting from July 2024 with Tascan at the helm of the Company.
The worldwide market for games is anticipated to be worth $268. 8 billion by 2025. Adding to this, Netflix is also planned to join this market and this move may create disruption in the market because the company is going to provide games based on its content and technology. This is in line with the general strategy of the traditional media organisations to expand into gaming arena in a bid to offer more content to their audiences as well as look for new revenue streams.
However, Netflix is likely to encounter several problems in its gaming business. This means that the company has to rival other well renowned game making companies such as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo among others. However, creating quality games is a costly process and entails the hiring of professional personnel. Nevertheless, with Tascan at the head of Netflix, it is ready to overcome these challenges and find its place in the gaming industry.
